FAQs

The Trans-Jordan Greenwaste Program (disposal and product sales) is permanently closed. Green waste material will still be accepted as trash and charged a gate rate of $39.00 per ton. Please visit Trans-Jordan Landfill for more information.

Salt Lake County has a free drive-up Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center for county residents, located at 8805 South 700 West in Sandy.

Hours:
Monday - Saturday
7:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is anything in or around your home that is poisonous, flammable, corrosive, or toxic, as well as products (such as electronics) that contain certain materials like heavy metals.

Common HHW includes:

  • Automotive batteries and fluids like antifreeze and oil
  • Fuels
  • Paints, stains, and varnishes
  • Pesticides, herbicides, and other yard chemicals
  • Many cleaning supplies
  • Cooking oil
  • Aerosols
  • Electronics and fluorescent bulbs
  • Nonalkaline batteries such as lithium, NiMH, NiCd (alkaline batteries—such as common AA, AAA, C, and D batteries—are not considered hazardous)

Business waste and waste from residents of other counties is accepted for a fee. Business waste is accepted by appointment only (call 385-468-4380 to schedule an appointment for business waste disposal).

It is dangerous to dispose of HHW in your garbage can or down sinks or toilets, and it is illegal to abandon HHW or pour it into gutters, storm drains, or waterways. Storing or disposing of these items improperly poisons our land, air, and water and may result in both civil and criminal penalties.

For more information about HHW collection, visit  SaltLakeHealth.org/HHW.

Alternatively, HHW may be taken to safe HHW disposal sites at the Salt Lake Valley or Trans-Jordan Landfills.

Your garbage container is only for household and yard trash (limbs cut in 2 ft. lengths). Construction materials and hazardous waste are not allowed

Do not overfill your bins or place extra bags or items next to them. For safety reasons, our drivers can't leave their trucks to pick up spilled garbage or items on the side.

1. Corrugated Cardboard

This includes any size material consisting of a fluted corrugated sheet, like shipping boxes and packing boxes. Flatten all boxes and remove packaging items such as Styrofoam, peanuts, bubble wrap, and plastic liners.

2. Plastic Bottles and Jugs with a Neck

This includes water bottles and milk gallon containers. Rinse out any residue and put the cap back on. All other plastic material is considered trash. Do not put any other plastic items in the bin.

3. Metal Cans from Food & Beverage

This includes all food and beverage cans made from aluminum or steel. Rinse out any residue. Do not put any other type of metal in the bin.

4. Paper and Uncoated Paperboard

This includes computer and office paper, paper bags, newspapers, junk mail, and cereal boxes. We cannot take cardboard with wax coating, such as juice or milk cartons, or dirty items such as pizza boxes and other food containers.

If your container was not emptied on your regularly scheduled pick-up day, call or text Ace Disposal at (801) 363-9995 or email customerservice@acedisposal.com

New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day could affect your pick-up day. If your pick-up falls on or after the holiday, your pick-up will be delayed by one day for that week only.

Garbage and recycling containers must not be set out on the street for collection the day before collection and must be set out before 7:00 AM on collection day.

For details about where to place your can, please review the following code link (City Code 7-11-100: Time and Place of Pick Up).
